The power of cozy!

In 1737 Irish immigrants flocked to the United States.  These immigrants began observing St. Patrick’s Day publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City in 1766.  Today, the New York City parade is the world’s oldest civilian parade and largest in the US with over 150,000 participants.  Each year 3 million people line the one and half mile parade route to watch the precession which takes more than five hours.

Now you can parade around in some of our traditional Irish Sock Gram styles.  We have clover and scroll socks and tartan, plaid and clover socks – such cute little shamrocks!  The shamrock was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of Spring.  Did you know that the Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in the heritage and the displeasure with English rule.  The Tartan is a criss-cross horizontal and vertical band pattern.  There are very few Irish tartans unlike Scotland.  Most people of Irish heritage wear the tartan of the country or province where their families lived.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17^th.  Since this day falls during the Christian season of Lent Irish families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.  The Irish were able to waive the Lenten obligations on this day and could drink, feast and dance.  Speaking of dance, did you know the first performance of Riverdance took place on April 30, 1994?   Sock Grams also has the famous lace up look that will help you feel like one of the troupe.  Maybe you could even become the next Michael Flately wearing these.

The traditional Irish music consists of hornpipes, flutes, accordions and fiddles.  The famous rock band U2.came from Ireland.  They do not play the Celtic music traditionally heard but with socks showing the Irish heritage you too (U2) can dance around listening to anything that peaks your interest. (Sorry we couldn’t resist the pun!)
